Framing and Matting Your Piece

Frame and Matte add Size, Dimension

Framing and matting adds a touch of class to any work. It also adds size and dimension. One to two inches of matte on the sides and top and a little extra on the bottom is about average, although a little more or less is normal also. This means you can take an 8 x 12 photo for example, and buy a 12 x 16 frame and have a custom matte cut at one of the craft stores like Michaels (Frame Stores generally charge a premium) and wind up with a significantly larger finished, framed piece.

You can also try something like the triple portrait below with the 5 x 7 shots or even the 8 x 12s. You just have to have 3 picture holes cut in the matte to fit a large frame.

You should have a firm backing for your piece. The outer edges of the matte is the size of your frame. The opening in the matte is the size of your picture. The opening of the matte is usually cut at about a 50 degree angle so that the color of the core matte material shows. This adds a sense of depth to the piece.

The matte should overlap the picture by just enough so that the edges of the matte cover the edges picture and the picture can be secured to the matte. The matte/picture is then place inside the frame and the backing is secured.
